The cheapest registered agent over three years is Northwest Registered Agent: $375 for the first year plus two renewals at $125, on prices read 2026-09-11. The lowest first-year price is $99 at Harbor Compliance and ZenBusiness, renewing at $149 and $199, so the year-one price is not the price. Cheaper still is being your own agent, which 32 of 39 verified states allow, at the cost of your home address on the public record and being available in office hours.
Registered agent prices are quoted for the first year. The number that matters is the renewal, because you pay it every year the company exists. The table sorts by renewal and shows three years in total, first year plus two renewals.
Switching costs the state's change fee, once. It is $20 in the median state and zero in 5 states; the change-of-agent guide lists every state.

The free option: be your own agent
Most states let an adult resident, or the company's own officer, act as registered agent. The trade: your street address goes on the public record, you must be there during business hours, and a missed lawsuit is on you. The state-by-state rules show where it is allowed and on what conditions.
