A limited liability company shall designate and continuously maintain in this State: (1) an office, which need not be a place of its activity in this State; and (2) an agent for service of process.

A registered agent is the person or company the state and the courts send legal papers to. In New Jersey the statute calls this role the agent for service of process; it is the same thing as a registered agent. The agent must have a street address in New Jersey, not a PO box, and be available during business hours.
Annual report and what happens without an agent
The Annual Report is due on the last day of the month in which the business was formed. Fee: $75 for an LLC, $75 for a corporation. Late fee: not confirmed.
