A registered agent (also known as a resident agent or a statutory agent) accepts any notifications of legal action, notice, or demand related to the business and provides those notices to the business (NDCC ch. 10-01.1). A business may not serve as its own registered agent.

A registered agent is the person or company the state and the courts send legal papers to. In North Dakota the statute calls this role the statutory agent; it is the same thing as a registered agent.
